Pasta Fazool (Pasta e Fagioli)
Pasta e Fagioli, Pasta Fagioli, Pasta Fazul
Taste of the Past, Pride of the Region
Pasta e fagioli translates literally to pasta and beans, representing a cornerstone of Italian cucina povera that originated in the rural communities of Naples and the surrounding Campania region.
This nourishing dish emerged as a practical solution for sustaining working families through inexpensive, shelf-stable ingredients like dried beans and pasta. Regional variations abound throughout Italy, with Neapolitan versions typically featuring tomato and garlic while Venetian preparations often omit tomato in favour of a lighter broth.
The dish gained cultural recognition in the United States through Italian-American communities, particularly after Dean Martin popularised the Neapolitan pronunciation pasta fazool in his 1953 recording of That's Amore. Today it remains a beloved comfort food that honours its humble origins while adapting to modern kitchens. ■
