The Floating Farm in Rotterdam, a pioneering project launched in 2019, has been put up for sale. The three-storey facility was designed to showcase urban agriculture by producing food closer to consumers without the need for traditional land.
According to DairyReporter, the closure follows a regulatory conflict regarding a replacement floor intended to reduce emissions. Although the technology met environmental performance standards, it was not certified for use within the Netherlands.
The four million euro site featured automated milking systems and on-site processing. Its struggle highlights the difficulties innovative food systems face when government regulations fail to keep pace with new technologies.
