Negroni Cocktail
Negroni, Americano variant, Italian Negroni
Food, Place & the Past
The Negroni is widely believed to have originated in Florence, Italy, around the early 20th century.
According to popular cocktail lore, Count Camillo Negroni requested a stronger version of the Americano cocktail, which consists of Campari, vermouth, and soda water. He asked his bartender to replace the soda water with gin, creating the potent and balanced drink that bears his name. The cocktail reflects the Italian aperitivo culture, where drinks are served before a meal to stimulate the appetite.
Over decades, the Negroni has evolved from a local Florentine specialty into a global symbol of Italian elegance and mixology. Its simple equal-parts ratio makes it a staple for bartenders worldwide, while its striking crimson colour remains its most recognisable feature. The drink is traditionally paired with salty snacks, such as olives, which contrast the sweetness of the vermouth and the bitterness of the herbal liqueur. ■
