A thirteen year old boy has passed away after spending nearly a decade in a coma caused by E. coli.

Mattia Maestri has died at the age of 13 following a prolonged medical battle that began in 2017. The child had been in a coma for nine years after contracting an E. coli infection.

According to Food Safety News, the illness was linked to the consumption of raw milk cheese in Trento. The infection subsequently led to haemolytic uraemic syndrome, known as HUS.
