A University of Chicago model estimates that a federal ultra-processed food label would cost $14.2bn a year, with reformulation accounting for two-thirds of the total, according to Food Industry Executive.
The source recommends applying the study’s break-even test at SKU level. Manufacturers could use it to decide which products warrant reformulation, which should receive new labels and which may be better withdrawn before an official definition is approved.
