California lettuce growers have ploughed under approximately one third of their crop. This massive loss occurred despite the fact that the lettuce was never actually implicated in safety issues.
According to Food Safety News, the industry is now calling for changes to how findings are handled. The goal is to ensure that a single farm takes the loss rather than ninety per cent of the total lettuce supply being affected.
