A recent report identifies emerging threats to European food safety, including the illegal use of freshness enhancers in fish.

The European Food Safety Authority has released a report detailing emerging risks within the food chain for 2025. Out of 55 topics considered, 43 underwent in-depth analysis to determine their potential impact on public health.

According to Food Safety News, the report specifically highlights the presence of bongkrekic acid as a concern. Additionally, officials are monitoring the illegal use of certain substances designed to make fish appear fresher than they actually are.

A total of 25 of the identified topics were deemed significant enough to warrant further consideration as the agency continues to monitor food safety trends across Europe.
