A recent outbreak of Cyclospora involving 1,644 cases across five states has highlighted significant gaps in food traceability. According to Food Industry Executive, the FDA managed to trace the contamination back to a single shredded lettuce supplier, but did so relying solely on patient interviews and distribution records.
The investigation revealed a concerning lack of physical evidence, as no actual product samples ever tested positive for the parasite. This incident underscores the urgency of the FSMA 204 requirements, which aim to standardise and improve how food is tracked through the supply chain to prevent such blind spots in the future.
