Researchers have identified a need to expand the list of hazards associated with powdered infant formula. Following recent cases of illness, experts suggest that Clostridium botulinum spores and cereulide toxin should now be recognised as relevant risks.
According to a report from Food Safety News, the ingestion of clostridial spores that produce botulinum neurotoxin can lead to infant botulism. Additionally, the production of cereulide has been linked to the manufacture of arachidonic acid oil, which is used as an optional ingredient in some formulas.
